An Example Case Choosing a Good URL

Below is an example of choosing a URL. Remember, the goal is to set up a web site that will get a reasonable amount of traffic and will make some money.

I ran across an offer today that sells a cream to heal facial scars, like acne scars and burns, for example. As an affiliate, if someone were to click on a link from my site and end up purchasing the cream, I would earn $40, which is not bad. So let’s say I decide to go after this business and set up such a web site. Obviously, in order to make any money, I need people to visit the site. And by the way, I am looking for people who already have an interest, and the stronger the interest the better, in scar removal creams. Don’t waste your time trying to convince someone with little or no interest in the product. You want someone who is already on the fence, and you want to push them over the fence to make a purchase.

First I went to the Google key word tool. To find this you simply do a Google search on that term, and the first result is the key word tool. If you have a Google account you can sign in, but you can use the tool without an account.

I first typed in “scar removal cream” into the tool. The results were that 4,400 people per month do searches for this term. This is a healthy number, but this is only an approximation. The Google figures are unfortunately not 100% accurate at the present time. But common sense tells you that people who have acne scars might search on a term like “scar removal cream”, and if the number of searches is 4,400 as they say, or 1,000 or some other number, that is still pretty good.

The next thing to do is check and see if you can purchase a URL called scarremovalcream.com. To do this I use GoDaddy. I have well over 100 URLs with GoDaddy, and I find them to be reliable.

Here is a key point. If you can get a .com URL that is great. You can also get results on search engines that are just as good with .net or .org URLs. You will not get such good results with .info, .biz, .us, or other such domain endings, referred to as domain extensions. How do I know this? Let’s just say I paid a lot of money to find out.

On GoDaddy I discover that neither .com, .net, or .org are available for my term. I go back to the Google tool and find another term to look for. I find that “scar removal creams” has a similar number of searches. I check in GoDaddy, and the .net and .org are available. So if I decide to promote this offer, I will purchase one of those domains. Once I write the content and build the site and do a certain amount of promotion, I can expect to receive steady traffic after I rank well in the search engines.
